35,000 cups of tea served
In a unique partnership between Sri Lanka Tourism-Sri Lanka Airlines- Sri Lanka Tea Board with the implementing partner APOT( Asia Pacific Onboard Tour agencies) Sri Lanka crossed the Largest Tea Party Guinness Book of Record in Kandy over the weekend. The private sector partners being the global value added tea brand Basilur whilst the official biscuit being Maliban.
The 32,682 and 32,683rd cup of tea was consumed by HE The President Maithripala Sirisena and the Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe signifying Sri Lanka crossing the Guinness record . The Sri Lankan feat set was 35,000 beating 32,681 set at the Nehru Stadium in the Indore, India said Chairman Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau Dr Rohantha Athukorala together with CEO Sri Lankan Airlines Rakitha Jayawardena . APOT founder Keethi Hapugasdeniya said once the Guinness Committee ratifies the feat, Sri Lanka Tourism plans to take the event globally demonstrates continuity of the project which is an interesting idea given that daily there are over thirty million people who consume a cup of Ceylon tea he said.
