Galle Harbour, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest ports is a natural harbour, located in Galle, south-western coast of Sri Lanka. Currently Galle port serves as one of the most active regional ports in the country and it is also the only Sri Lankan port that provides facilities for pleasure yachts.
One of Sri Lanka’s oldest cities, Galle was once commercial port, from which were exported spices and precious stones. As one of the country’s most prominent cities colonised by the Portuguese and later by the Dutch, today it still bears traces of this colonial past. Visitors can have a wander around the old town and its fortifications, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage. Built by the Portuguese at the end of the 16th century, they are perfectly preserved.
Galle has it all: historic colonial sights, serene temples, sandy beaches, azure ocean and rivers teeming with wildlife, all of which make this southern seaside escape a must-see on most Sri Lankan travel itineraries.
