Poson Festival

Venue: Around the country

Date: 10th June 2025

Marking the birth of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Poson Poya Day is a much-celebrated event. It dates back to the 3rd Century BC when King Devanampiyatissa was converted to Buddhism by Arahat Maha Mahinda, the son of King Ashoka, the Emperor of India. Following this momentous event, Buddhism was declared the state religion of Sri Lanka.

The entire country celebrates this significant milestone, but the festivities culminate at Mihintale, known as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It is believed that the conversion took place here. The Ambasthale Dagoba, the temple in Mihintale, which is accessible by 1,840 steps, marks the spot where the historic encounter occurred.
