Celebrating Vesak

The official National Vesak Festival 2015 will be held in Mahiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya which will be inaugurated by the President of Sri Lanka on 3rd May 2015.

Mahiyangana is located in the Badulla District in Uva Province of Sri Lanka and is a sacred historic place for Buddhists. It is believed that Gautama Buddha visited Mahayanganaya on the full moon poya day in order to settle a dispute between two tribes  then inhibited this area.

Vesak Festival in the City of Badulla

The annual Vesak festival of Muthiyangana Raja Maha Viharaya will commence on 3rd May 2015 until 5th May 2015 comprising of the infamous Muthiyangana Vesak Cultural Parade which will parade the streets with adorned elephants and cultural items, Bakthi Geetha and beautiful Vesak lanterns to illuminate the city of Badulla will also be on display.

Badulla is an ancient city located in the lower central hills of Sri Lanka and is a multinational city with the ancient Muthiyangana Temple located in its heart. Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara is an ancient Buddhist temple located in the middle of Badulla town in the Badulla District of Uva Province in Sri Lanka. History of this site starts with the Lord Buddha’s 3rd arrival to the island but legends on the area called Badulla begins from 19th – 18th century BC. Explore Badulla with the splendor of history on the most important day  in the Buddhist calendar-Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.

Other Vesak Festivals filled with Pandols, Lanterns and devotee activities  will illuminate all religiously significant locations around the country and will be held from 3rd May to 6th May 2015.
